by Jill Lublin

abstract prepared by Hugh Fisher

“So you've started your own business and you're ready to let the world (or your neighborhood) know,” Lublin writes.  “Understanding the function of public relations and what it comprises is an essential component of success.”

In this introductory article, she focuses on the steps necessary to develop a positive public image by reaching out to the community, prospective clients, and the media.  The first step in doing so is to understand what your company is and how to sum that up for those who’re new to your business.  “There may be situations such as at networking functions where you have only 30 seconds to introduce yourself and make that all-important first impression,” she writes.  Practicing your introduction and your core message make that first impression a strong one.  After this primary step is complete, Lublin describes how to create a media kit, generate the necessary contacts, and conduct public relations activities such as mass mailings in order to get the biggest “buzz” possible when it comes time to expand or release a new product.
